earthdancers is an active presence in the community, supporting and participating in many local events.

Recent Events

December 6th, 2008

  • earthdancers rasied over $1,500 during their 3rd annual Winter Performance Series with special seasonal pieces, student choreography, musical guest Dominique Royer, and sneak previews of works-in-progress by Denise Vitali and elleQ dance factory. The performance was held at Thorneloe Theatre at Laurentian University, and helped to raise money to cover production costs for the April 2009 benefit performance. 

September 8th, 2008

  • earthdancers was invited to perform for the Nickel District Conservation Authority, where they presented Sweat, Fly and Gypsy Cab 

July 4th, 2008

  • earthdancers was invited to perform for during the opening ceremonies of the Northen Lights Festival Boreal. For several years, the company has made appearances at the festival, and it was an honour to be included in this kick-off celebration.  

November 30th, 2007

  • earthdancers raised over $1,500 in their second Annual Winter Performance Series at the Church of the Ascension. After much planning, rehearsing, baking, and decorating, the show was a great success.  The show this year included pieces by Denise and Lauren, but also many student pieces, giving them the opportunity to have their choreography performed. Like last year, many of the pieces are going to be extended and put into the earthdancers show at the end of March.

November, 2007

  • earthdancers performed Rainy Day Dreams at the 2nd Annual Sudbury Dance festival at Fraser Auditorium. This was their second year participating in the annual festival.

October, 2007

  • earthdancers performed Rainy Day Dreams at the Sudbury District Health Unit Conference in early October at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Sudbury.

July, 2007

  • earthdancers performed 10:10, Shift and Tokyo at the Northern Light's Festival Boreal in the amphitheatre in Bell Park.

May 16th, 2007

  • earthdancers were invited by the Regional Centre of Expertise to dance during their community workshop on healthy economic, environmental and social sustainability. The day-long event was hosted at Bryston's on the Park where the company perfromed Rainy Day Dreams and Requiem.

May 2nd, 2007

  • The senior and intermediate earthdancers performed the choreography of Arrival and Reunion and Fade to Black to new accopaniment by the Sudbury Youth Orchestra.

April 28th, 2007

  • On behalf of earthdancers, company alumni Julye Huggins and Natalie Smith participated in the World Wildlife Fund climb up the CN Tower, raising $660 for the WWF Global Warming campaign. They may not have danced their way up, but they clocked in at 19min 47 sec and 30min 38sec respectively. Thank you again to our friends, family and audience members who pitched in to our fundraising efforts.

December 9th, 2006

  • earthdancers staged its 1st annual Winter Performance Series. This in-house show featured many seasonally themed pieces, including several works in progress. With much dedicated rehearsing, some of this new choreography will be further fleshed out and polished for the upcoming March 23rd and 24th performances. Despite limited seating, the company collected nearly $800 in donations to help cover the production expenses of our annual spring benefit show.

April 20th, 2006

  • earthdancers was honoured by the Ontera Youth Achievement Awards, which recognizes youth "who lead by example, motivate their peers by their actions and hold a truly inspiring vision of their community and the North." The nomination acknowledged the dancers for weaving "their talents, determination, and environmental consciousness into inspiring fundraising performances that highlight public awareness of modern dance and positively impact the fundraising efforts of worthwhile causes." Of the three finalists, earthdancers was deemed "a truly inspiring nominee" and received the Osprey Media LP Arts Award.

Saturday April 22nd, 2006

  • The intermediate and junior earthdancers performed on the main stage of the Sudbury Earth Day Festival held in downtown Sudbury's Market Square.

Saturday February 18th, 2006

  • earthdancers performed at the EarthCare Sudbury Youth Environmental Gala hosted by Cambrian College. This event celebrated the success of the local Youth Action on Climate Change Contest, which was held as part of the national One-Tonne Challenge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

February 11th, 2006

  • Both the intermediate and senior earthdancers performed at the New Sudbury Centre as part of the annual Heart and Wellness initiative by the shopping centre.

Sunday November 13th, 2005

  • earthdancers performed in the Tsunami Rx Benefit Concert, an international multi-cultural folk art festival at the Sudbury Community Arena, to help raise funds to build a school in Sri Lanka. On the same day, company members Leah Whittaker and Andrew Kurnew also performed My Strength, My Shoulder at the Finnish Seniors Fall Concert.

Friday October 21st, 2005

  • earthdancers attended 3 workshops with TILT sound + motion (who had performed Oct 17th-19th at Sheridan Auditorium) in technique, repertoire and composition.

On Stage:

  • Performed at fundraising events such as the Tsunami Rx Benefit Concert in support of the communities in Sri Lanka, Hispanic Breezes for Sudbury Regional Palliative Care,Kevin Closs: Concert for the Earth for the Earth Day Committee of Sudbury, Sudbury's Paws for a Cause walk-a-thon in support of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA), Mother/Daughter Walk for Heart and Stroke, and a concert for the Sudbury Youth Orchestra.
  • Performed at other events such as the Manitou Conference, an Amnesty International Rally, Sudbury's Official Launch of Earth Month, the Sudbury EarthDay Festival, the EarthCare Sudbury Youth Environmental Gala hosted by Cambrian College, Northern Lights Festival Boreal at Bell Park, Art Express at the Sudbury Art Gallery, the New Sudbury Centre's Heart and Wellness show, the National Wellness for Women Conference hosted by the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women, and several liturgical performances the United Church.
  • Workshops with Dancetheatre David Earle of Guelph.
  • Workshops with TILT sound + motion of Toronto.
  • Toured to Northern College in Kirkland Lake sponsored by the Junior School of the Arts Northern Ontario (JSANO). 

Off Stage:

  • Removed garbage and recyclable items from a 2km section of Junction Creek as part of the TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup.
  • Planted 1,075 evergreen saplings through the City's Land Reclamation Program.
  • Hosted couple of public lectures by Friends of the Earth officials on climate change and clean air.
  • Represented at Environment Canada's EcoAction 2000 Conference in Sudbury and at the Creating Ripples Conference hosted by the Canadian Network for Environment Education and Communication.
  • Participated in the Canada Life Climb at the CN Tower for World Wildlife Fund Canada.
  • Fundraising activities to support earthdancers' performance budget.  Our yard sale surplus has also been donated to the Jarrett Centre and the YWCA Geneva House. 

Recognition:

  • Presented the 2006 Osprey Media LP Arts Award as nominated for the Ontera Youth Achievement Awards.
  • Denise Vitali, Artistic Director, received Sudbury's Community Builders Award of Excellence for her contributions to the arts.
  • VETAC mentioned earthdancers in their 2001 book Healing the Landscape.
  • Nominated three years consecutively for the YTV Achievement Awards - finalist in both the 1998 and 1999 Environmental category.
  • Met with Jane Goodall when the company was recognized for its contribution to the local environment and support of VETAC's programs at the opening and dedication ceremonies of the Jane Goodall Reclamation Trail in Coniston.
  • Frequent participant as a marching group in the Sudbury Santa Clause Parade - winning second place in 1996 as company members walked along the parade route picking up litter and spreading awareness.
  • Met with the Honorary Chairperson of Friends of the Earth Bruce Cockburn.
